BF3 servers, updates and status

DICE have released server update R5 with the following changes:
- Crash fixes
- Latest PunkBuster DLLs included (in case the server doesn't auto-update)
- Security updates
- Fixed some problems with client<->server handshake, which would make players get kicked from the server halfway through loading
R5 can be installed by logging into the Game Panel and going to Game Servers > BF3 > Game Updates and R5 is available there.
Please note: We will force all BF3 Game Servers to R5 by mid day Friday, 28th.
Kind regards

Hi there,
There are a number of issues that have been indentified this week (it would not be a BF release without them). Here are some of the key ones:
- Servers are producing bad frames. This means that key packets are getting lost and clients can suffer little stutters / warping. 64 slot servers are more prone to this issue.
- DICE have identified a source of potential lag in the client. This should be fixed in the next client update.
- A couple of maps are on occasion causing lag. These are Teheran Highway and Caspian Border.
- The Server side build is far from stable and can crash for a variety of reasons, the typical cause is end of round change.
- Punkbuster's auto-update rarely functions as it should. Affects both client and server.
All of the above are pending a fix from DICE with the exception of PB which is mostly resolved. As soon as we have more info, we'll let you know.
Kind regards

I read this, however, with the UK server there doesnt seem to be any difference.
Terhan Highway and Caspian still laggy as fk.
The biggest issue at the moment is the server keeps kicking everyone off, not sure but I think it is rebooting itself. I would try a clean install of the server.

pfff
what was the meaning of "alpha" and "beta" ?
but hey, let the customer, who even not decided to play the beta because it could crash the pc ect, let them also now be beta tester
-.-
Buy a game for 60 €, play it, risk damage on your system, be forced to be beta tester, be mad because you crash over and over again, .... games are fun these days hu?

I'd also like to point out that it isn't happening on all servers to the degree it happens on ours and only one other server has ever restarted while i was playing on it

When I play on 64 slot German servers I have no problems, no crashes, no lag or something else. Don't know what is wrong with the UK servers.

Here is KillerCreations response to the issue with our UK conquest server crashing.

Me

The server keeps rebooting itself for no known reason. It seems to happen regularly upon map change after 3-4 rounds.
The startup.txt is set to quickmatch vars.
Please help!

May I ask why this server is suffering from very frequent end of round crashes (at least 10-20 times a day) and yet other servers do not seem to suffer from this, at least no where near as frequently.

Every server suffers from it. The longest anyone 64 slot server has stayed up for is 6 hrs since R5 was released. Typically, 1-3 hrs is the max before a crash occurs.

Hi Justin
I checked around a bit and it sems that you are correct. I have found that its releated to map changes and not round ends.We have had a USA server running 1 map since release and only had 2 crashes. I have also talked to other server owners who have noticed the same. So servers running only one map is more stable, this could be a tip to other customers haveing the same problems we have had on our KC server. I'm gonna do a test on it now and set 1 map and see if crashes decreases on this one to.

Hi
Another tip to consider, other users report that if you are using a rcon tool to set welcome and/or return messages it has helped them turning that off. Probably indicates rcon protocol is not all that stable at this time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have turned the welcome/return messages off for now. Also, we have set it to a single map rotation. The map will be changed daily so we don't get too sick of playing the same over and over! Please note this is only temporary until the next server patch which should be released soon.

Hi there,
DICE have released Server Update R6 with the following changes:
- Fix for crashes usually occurring during level switches. Possible side effect of the fix might result in memory leakage.
- Game servers should no longer quit in some situations where the online backend servers are down. Server will reconnect to the backend once it's up again.
- Fix for ghost servers which didn't accept connections.
- Kick reasons should better match situations where they are issued. This will help battlelog provide more accurate information to the player.
- Connection fixes to avoid players sometimes being rejected while joining the game server on one of the last slots.
R5 can be installed by logging into the Game Panel and going to Game Servers > BF3 > Game Updates and R6 is available there.
Please note: We will force all BF3 Game Servers to R6 by mid afternoon tomorrow, 31st October.
Kind regards

Last night this server still did what he want and shut down. Its terrible to play on it!
Maybe it depends in the amount of slots. 64 is too much at the moment. I testest any other servers now and on 32 or 48 slot servers with full rotation are no problems. Yesterday I played on a French server with Conquest, TDM and all maps in rotation... NO problems and NO lag!!!
It pisses me on to loose constantly my score, unlocks and awards. I repeated my Rank 6 three times and this is really not funny. Other players and guests will feel the same and never come back to a crashing server.
So in my opinion it would be better to use not so much slots until all is fixed!! The server would be stable and by the way not so expensive.

I have just removed all additional setting from rweb to see if that is causing it. Please lets see if its better now.

Hi there,
This is unrelated to the server side but we thought this should be mentioned as it's particular relevant to BF3 and Battlelog. This is a bug a member of KillerCreation managed to track down and has been forwarded to DICE.
IE9 coupled with the latest Nvidia drivers (285.62) includes a GPU accelerator function that reserves a certain amount of rending power just for IE9 tasks that never gets released to other processes. I believe the beta drivers also included this.
While IE9 is open, for example Battlelog, single GPU performance is hit by up to 20% while in-game. SLI performance is more pronounced and gets hit by up to 50%. The impact is not immediate, it can take up to 2 hours (oddly) to take affect after a clean restart of Windows.
As far as we can see, this bug/function has not been documented and is on by default in IE9: Internet Options > Advanced > Accelerated Graphics. To disable, just tick 'Use Software rending instead of GPU rendering*'

Hi there,
DICE are adding a new country filter to Battlelog and in order for game servers to be compliant with this filter, a minor update to every game server's command line is required.
The country filter is not yet live in Battle but will be shortly. In order to make your game server compliant with this new country filter, please follow the steps below:
- Log into the Game Panel
- Click the 'Game Servers' icon and select the relevant Battlefield 3 Game Server
- Select the 'Command Line Changer' icon and on the right hand side under the Action header, click the word 'Selected'
By clicking 'Selected', this will apply the new command line and restart the game server with the new switch '-Online.Country GB'.
That is all that is required and please carry out this update ASAP.
Kind regards

Hi there,
DICE have released Server Update R9 with the following changes:
- Support for unranked servers (vars.unranked)
- Ranked servers have a few settings as read-only.
- Unranked servers allow changing of all settings
- Reintroduced vars.allUnlocksUnlocked for unranked servers
- The game server will parse all of Startup.txt even if an error is encountered
- vars.roundStartPlayerCount / vars.roundRestartPlayerCount handling rewritten to be more natural
- vars.maxPlayers cannot be used to go past the server's max number of slots any more
- Security updates to the game server
- Fixed several server crashes, hangs, and a 10-second stall - all of which would make the server drop every player
- vars.gamePassword can only be invoked during server startup, not while the server is already running
- vars.teamKillCountForKick 0 will disable team kicking instead of kicking people frivolously
- banList.add would sometimes crash; fixed now
- EOD bot scoring exploit fix
R9 is scheduled for release today, Tuesday 22nd at 07:30 GMT in coordination with the client side update.
Battlelog will be down for maintenance between 07:00 - 09:00 GMT (ish) during which will take this opportunity to update all BF3 game servers to the latest release.
Kind regards

Hi there,
Server update R9 has created a number of issues for server admins. They key ones so far have been these 4:
1) Servers disappearing from Battlelog. This is not directly related to R9 and was a bug introduced during EA maintenance on Tuesday morning by the Battlelog team. Battlelog is a front-end system that pulls and displays data from the Blaze database back-end. Apparently, the Battlelog team have now corrected this issue.
2) vars.idleTimeout: This one seems to be the source of much frustration and we and many other RSPs have brought this to the attention of DICE for review in R10. Either the timeout will be increased (most likely) or it'll be allowed to be removed.
3) vars.roundStartPlayerCount: In R9, this var has been hard-coded to a minimum of 4 for ranked game servers. Originally DICE wanted a minimum of 8 but reduced this to 4 after RSPs complained. This is again under review for R10 but I suspect 4 will remain the min.
4) Frozen in place pre-round: This is again under review and has been since beta. Hopefully this will be corrected soon but no eta just yet.
General issue
5) Server crashes: We and many other RSP's having been driving this is as the number one issue with BF3 since the retail launch. Although many bugs have been fixed, servers are still quite unstable and can crash between 1-4 times a day, on average. DICE are hard at work trying to resolve bugs and the server build should become increasingly stable as updates are released.
Kind regards

Hi there,
Tomorrow we will be doubling our peering capacity at the London Internet Exchange (LINX) and have scheduled a maintenance window between 11:00 - 11:45 AM.
The upgrade is expected to take approximately 5 minutes during which external connectively to around 40% of destinations will be affected.
Kind regards
